To the Committee of the County Administration Board for Halland, Sweden

A petition concerning the conflict on the design of the great organ in St. Nikolai’s Church, Halmstad, Sweden

The undersigned - who are all organ experts, church musicians, concert organists, organ professors, organ builders or in other respects engaged in the art of the organ - hereby appeal to the Committee of the County Administration Board to withdraw the demand by the Senior County Antiquary (ultimately Custodian of National Monuments) to reinstate the façade of the previous organ.

The stipulated rebuilding of the organ is completely unrealistic and cannot be done without seriously affecting the instrument, the church room, and the music life of the church - and at an indefensible high cost of around 4 million Swedish crowns (approximately 295 000 £).

The Tengbom Façade

has nothing whatsoever in common with the new organ, visually, acoustically or in design.
has mute pipes with completely different graduations (measurements) than the sounding pipes of the new organ, which would be forced into the old façade.
is a product of its time and an example of a decadent style, valid during the early war years (1940s) but unacceptable at any other time. To that extent it is (hopefully) unique, but only in a negative sense.
has no element of style in common with the church room, and neither with any organ building tradition, earlier or later. The reasoning that it is an indispensable part of an architectural "unit" is a later argument, that fails through its own absurdity.

Den gamla orgeln / The previous organ / Die alte Orgel / L’orgue ancien The front of the new organ is an integrated part of the function of the instrument and cannot be easily exchanged. The old façade, on the other hand, is what is really meant by a "façade"-a screen without any function that has been erected in front of the previous organ.

With this background in mind, we the undersigned appeal to the Committee of the County Administration Board

to withdraw the demand by the Senior County Antiquary to reinstate the old façade, and to leave the new organ in peace,
to allow a delegation of ours, the undersigned, an opportunity as soon as possible to personally meet with the Committee in order to present our petition.

I really cannot believe this proposal - it is an absurdity and completely misguided. Is there really anyone on this earth who finds this proposal attractive! Please, do not waste your money; if this project were to go forth, Sweden would be the laughing stock of the organ world.

An organ case should to be an integral part of the whole instrument, not simply a meaningless adornment. I fail to perceive what possible merits the proposal to retain the old screen possesses; artistically, aesthetically or technically.

Det är svårt att finna ord för detta vanvett.
Även om Kyrkl.samfälligheten i Halmstad skulle ha begått alla formella fel man kan göra så måste ju minsta barn se att den nya orgeln passar mycket bättre in i kyrkorummet än det gamla spöket. När man dessutom ser på orgelns disposition så inser väl alla att det vore en enorm kapitalförstöring att genomföra fasadbytet.

Till RAÄ vill jag säga: Släpp prestigen och låt för en gångs skull den levande kulturhistorien, som ju orgeln representerar, få blomma!

Mit den Denkmalschützern gibt es IMMER Probleme. In meiner Gemeinde wurde ebenfalls eine neue Orgel gebaut; die gesamte Pfarre stimmte über 3 vom Orgelbauer entworfene Prospekte ab und fand mehrheitlich zu einem Konsens. Das Denkmalamt zeigte sich davon unbeeindruckt und kippte die Entscheidung der Pfarre.

Never anybody made more harm throughout the complete History of The Pipe Organ than people like those that actually seem to have the right to kill your instrument, those from those Senior County Antiquaries over the World.In Luxembourg, those people destroyed several projects with the result that one classified Church now owns an electronic organ, another concert hall got an organ that could have been planned in the early 40's. They have interests,their ego wants to rule, if not capable of anything else in a creative way, to decide like Nero over Life an Death, just to decide, whatever the consequences, like if Art was in need ofr decisons,"experts" and primus inter pares-syndroms.Money and egotrips as a destructive feature to compensate stupidity, absence of own creativity, success , and above all mostly totally unskilled to talk or decide on anything seriously.If Art really got in those people's hand, than we can close the folder to ever. I wished this Comitee that wants this terrible idea to come true could be put in a personnally similar situation:erase their personnality, change their face to a clownesque look and mute their voice to synthetic rhetorics. Auch wenn mir der alte Prospekt ebenfalls gefällt, so ist doch der zusätzliche finanzielle Aufwand für eine nachträgliche Rückführung zum alten Aussehen keinesfalls zu rechtfertigen.

Vilken grotesk idé att förstöra den nya orgeln med Tengbom-fasaden. Undrar om det finns någon på raä som förstår vad det är frågan om. Jag hoppas verkligen att länsstyrelsen drar tillbaka raä:s beslut, alternativt att Halmstads församling har civilcourage nog att låta den nya orgeln vara orörd i alla fall.

For me it's incredible to change a good organs facade because someone don't like the present one.
It will give a great influence on the sound of the instrument, the inside view of the building and quite important it will be a great waste of (tax-)money, payed by the citizens of the area.
Now it is the moment to prevent a big mistake, so be clever and withdraw the whole idea.

Det är helt absurt; Pga att ärendet från församlingens sida inte sköttes helt enligt regelboken vill nu RA med maktspråk föra ärendet till vägs ände. Förslag; Överlämna den fina "Tengbomfasaden" till RA, den kan väl pryda någon lämplig vägg i Visby.

Big thankyou to you enlightened people. You are helping organists everywhere to understand that it is indeed Committees that should make artistic decisions, not artists. What better way to teach them humility than to put their fine organ behind a pile of crap? Having said that, and should your plan fall through, might I request the opportunity to tender in the sale of the previous case? It's not much, but some of it would look very interesting on the outside of my house, to channel the rain from my roof to the ground.

Revenir au buffet "Tengbom" serait une erreur, pire, une terrible faute de goût. Revenir à un buffet aussi laid, aussi peu favorable sur le plan acoustique ne serait tout simplement pas acceptable pour la communauté internationale des organistes.J'en appelle aux membres du Conseil Régional de la Région de Halland: renoncez à ce projet et votre décision sera un honneur pour votre assemblée.

To value historic remains is a very improtant thing. But historicism can really go to far. Making suggestions about putting "the old bat" on it place is compleatly absurd. People who even think such thoughts should adopt the monster themself. This beautiful new organ should really be left in peace. You can not put a new "frame" onto an organ just like putting plastic sunglasses on your glasses.

Nicht jedes Instrument, das aus früherer Zeit stammt, verdient es,
erhalten zu bleiben! Es kommt auf die Qualität an. Dies sage ich als Historier und vor allem als Konzertorganist, der sowohl auf der alten Orgel als auch auf dem wundervollen neuen Instrument mehrere Rezitals spielen durfte. Mit dem unprofessionellen Bestreben, den alten Prospekt wieder zu errichten, würde sich der Landeskonservator weltweit blamieren! Man könnte allenfalls die
ehemalige Orgel in ein Orgelmuseum unterbringen

This is the very first time that I ear about the will of a State Office to destroy a beautiful organ case in order to re-install an odd and unpleasant free-standing pipe display which doesn’t blend at all with the original church architecture and, moreover, will affect in a very bad way the acoustical properties of that instrument.

Jag har varit i Halmstad och både sett och hört den nya orgeln att förstöra orgeln med den gamla fasaden och därtill med ett högt pris betecknar jag som ett kvalificerat vansinne.

An organ facade is a living, integral part of an instrument. To superimpose a facade from one of the least enlightened periods in organ building on an instrument of integrity and beauty is destructive and absurd. To spend vast sums of money on such a project borders on the obscene.

Ett huvudproblem kan kommenteras (fler finns):

1. Kompetensproblemen hos RAÄ beror till stor del på oacceptabel underbemanning för orgelfrågorna. En person (som ej arbetar heltid) ska avgöra allt från enkla, till omfattande och svåra frågor. RAÄ uppmanas omgående att bredda kompetensen på orgelområdet. Om RAÄ breddade kompetensen genom att skapa ett öppet team (inte en dold referesgrupp), skulle förutsättningen att fatta kloka beslut finnas där. Halmstadsprojektet bär säkert på många okända turer, men att upplösningen av detta ärende blir att gamla misstag upprepas, är djupt beklagligt. Man frågar sig vilken nytta Tengbom-kopian är tänkt att få i S:t Nicolai kyrka?

Le Buffet d'un orgue est une pièce constitutive du résultat sonore, donc indispensable à l'harmonie des tuyaux. Il serait abérant de le supprimer sans réfléchir à la suite à donner en terme d'harmonie.

I hope there is a possibility to retrieve the decision about the beautiful and majestic organfacade in this church. This current facade is in shape with the architecture of the church. The old Tengbom-facade is not representing the sound of this organ. I wish you all the wisdom to make a good decision, and I hope it will be in a positive way.

This organ in Halmstad is a unique instrument, save it!

Ob der Tengbom-Prospekt schön ist oder nicht, ist aus der Sicht der Denkmalpflege nicht von Bedeutung. Vielmehr stellt sich doch die Frage, wie die Wiederherstellung eines gewesenen Zustands auf Kosten eines existierenden Zustands zu rechtfertigen sei.
Argumente wie das der "architektonischen Ganzheit" entsprechen jedenfalls eher einer denkmalpflegerischen Auffassung des 19. Jahrhunderts.
Zudem errinert das Errichten eines funktionslosen Prospekts an den "façadisme" im Städtebau, und ist als solches auch kritisch zu hinterfragen.
Es erscheint mir angebracht, die jüngere Ausstattungsgeschichte der Kirche zu respektieren, zumal ich denke, dass auch in Schweden Gelder für die Denkmalpflege sinnvoller eingesetzt werden könnten.
